What would you say if you saw such dolls in a shop? I would probably immediately buy one of them. However, unfortunately this is only an art project and these “dolls” are not for sale. Let’s all hope that one day they’ll make real copies of them.

Photographer Howard Schatz had an idea: photograph actors in a series of roles and dramatic situations to reveal the essence of their characters. Such is the premise behind Schatz’s new book, In Character: Actors Acting (Bulfinch), which captures some of Hollywood’s most emotive stars in the act of, well, making faces. Ranging from Martin Landau (playing a husband at his 50th-wedding-anniversary party) to Natasha Richardson (pretending to be a rock star on the way to her high-school reunion) to Rosie Perez (at right), the ensemble in Schatz’s photographs—some of which are showcased here on VF.com—illustrate the extraordinary power of pure and spontaneous imagination. Recent headlines are full of news about the falling stock, housing and god knows what other markets…and in fact if the markets crash in the nearest future, this is probably where some of us will have to live…I dont want that, guys let’s all work hard for this not to happen! Can we?
